D was out hunting last night and five brown bears came to the bait station. Seriously, this is my WORST nightmare come true! It's one thing to go hunting for a lone black bear, but D is outnumbered with this crew!
Here's the story from D:
It was 11:30 p.m. It was starting to get dark. I was about to get ready to leave to go home when I heard a breaking branch to my left. I waited and listened. I heard more commotion in the woods and got in position. I waited and listened for what seemed like an eternity. I identified two separate places where noises were coming from. I was anticipating it was the two black bears we'd seen from our trail camera. Then two brown bear cubs came out of the brush and went to the bait. Then I heard more commotion in the woods. Next two more bears appeared. A cub and a medium size bear that at that point I assumed it was the mom. Then another crash in the woods. Finally, a giant sow, mother of the family, appeared and towering above the bait barrel shook it to get out the popcorn. The sow retreated and the three cubs came to eat. In hindsight I think the medium sized bear must have been a two-year old sibling. I watched them for about ten minutes sitting on a hill sixty yards away with my rifle at the ready. I then slowly packed my things and retreated to my six wheeler to go home with my nerves shaken.
